Each exhibition engages its visitors on different levels. While some exhibitions focus on the aesthetics and language of the works themselves, others challenge visitors to engage with the thoughts and messages of the artists, raise controversial issues or encourage visitors to consider the questions and thoughts of our time.

"Exhibition Practice Today - Exhibition Practice of the Future?", questions what future exhibition practice might look like, taking into account current cultural policy and academic issues. Join us at the colloquium on Fri, 24 Jun 2022, listen to contributions from international experts and discuss possible new concepts of exhibition practice in the following workshop on Sat, 25 Jun 2022. Colloquium & Workshop - what is it about?

The aim of the colloquium on Fri, 24 Jun 2022 entitled Exhibition practice today - exhibition practice of the future? is to explore the question of how art-specific institutions present exhibitions, taking into account current cultural-political and academic debates. Experts and protagonists from the field are invited to give an insight into the handling of exhibitions, collection or sales material and to report on the difficulties and possibilities of a contemporary presentation and its conception. From this, demands for a possible exhibition practice of the future will be formulated.

Prof.in Dr. Ulli Seegers, Chair of Art Mediation & Cultural Management, Prodean of the Faculty of Philosophy at HHU Düsseldorf our lecturers: Christine Stender M.A., wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin & Diversity-Beauftragte des Instituts für Kunstgeschichte der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf; Univ. Prof.in Dr. Eva-Maria Troelenberg, Professorin für Transkulturelle Studien an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf; María Wills Londoño, Direktorin der Kunstmuseen der Banco de la República in Bogotá; Theresa Stärk M.A., wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin und Doktorandin am Institut für Kunstgeschichte der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf; Dr. Yilmaz Dziewior, Direktor des Museum Ludwig in Köln & Kurator des Deutschen Pavillons für die Biennale Arte di Venezia 2022; Zippora Elders, Chefkuratorin, Leiterin der kuratorischen Abteilung, einschließlich Education & Outreach des Gropius Baus in Berlin.

The experiences discussed at the colloquium are related to practice in order to provide a comprehensive basis for discussion at the Workshopfollowing right the day after on Sat, 25 Jun 2022, to enable reflections on new concepts for exhibition practice. The workshop is aimed at students and will be based on the presentations given on the previous day. Dr. Tanja Pirsig-Marshall, Curator of the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur Münster will give expert input on exhibition planning.

Format

Um möglichst vielen Interessent:innen unabhängig vom Standort die Chance zu geben, wird der Tagung ausschließlich im online-Format via Webex angeboten. Die Workshop wird im Haus der Universität stattfinden. Je nach Interesse können wir ein Hybrid-Format anbieten.

What exactly does that look like?

Die Colloquium will take place on 24.06.2022 von 9:30 - 13:00 und von 14:00 – 17:00 Uhr digital via Webex stattfinden. In Anschluss an jeden Vortrag soll es die Möglichkeit zu einer kurzen Diskussion und Fragerunde geben.

The Workshop will take place on 25.06.2022 von 9:00 – 15:00 in the Haus der Universität stattfinden. Bis zu 20 Studierende unterschiedlicher Fachrichtungen können hier die zuvor gehörten Vorträge Revue passieren lassen und anschließend, aufgeteilt in Kleingruppen, Konzepte für eine Ausstellungspraxis der Zukunft erarbeiten.

Team project - what is it?

The Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf provide master students in „Art Mediation & Cultural Management“ the possibility to develop a team project in which they get to organize a subject-specific, free project in a self-selected team determined by their own interests, goals and expectations in a topic of their chossing.

Cristina Escobar de Ríos, Nina Ryan Schingerlin and Linda Voigt advised by their tutor Christine Stender, have made it their task in their team project to deepen their understanding and knowledge in the exhibition practice. For this purpose they have organize a colloquium followed by a workshop as a frame to question the current exhibition practice and its possible future perspectives, taking into account current debates on cultural policy.
